Beer was originally brought to the island by the British, and over the years, as the number of visitors to the island increased so did the demand.
In 1951 the local company KEO, which was already well known for both its wine and spirit production, opened the first brewery in Cyprus. It prided itself on using top quality hops, maize and malt from Britain and Czechoslovakia, as unfortunately the Cyprus climate is just no good for growing hops! Many local drinkers will tell you that beer is like whisky and it is the water that is the most important ingredient.
It is possible for visitors enjoying a Cyprus day out, to join one of the escorted visits around the KEO brewery in Limassol which take place at 10.00 a.m. on weekday mornings. Visitors can see the different stages of manufacture.
The other major brewery in Cyprus is the Carlsberg brewery in the resort of Nicosia, it happily welcomes visitors eager to learn the secrets of the world’s favourite lager.
Carlsberg originally hails from Copenhagen Denmark,. Carlsberg chose the island of Cyprus to be the first country outside Denmark to produce Carlsberg beer under licence. The Chairman of Carlsberg Cyprus, Photis Photiades, signed the historic agreement in Copenhagen in 1967 and production began at the end of the next year.
The Photiades Group also produce Leon Beer on the island, which was the first Cypriot Beer, originally being produced in 1937, however production ceased in 1968. The heritage brand was reintroduced in 2003, and since then has gained popularity with Cypriots and tourists in Cyprus alike.
