Hamam Omerye The Hamam Omerye can be found in the old part of Nicosia and at one time was the only public baths in the city where fathers and sons, mothers and daughters used to go for their weekly bath! The great news is that it is possible to ‘take a step back in time’ and visit the Hamam and enjoy what was the original ‘detox’! The building that houses the Hamam was originally built in the 14th century as the Augustinian church of St Mary’s but two hundred years later, was converted into the city’s steam baths by the ottomans and soon became popular with families from all over the city! The Hamam closed in 2002 and was completely renovated, funded by the communal project ‘Partnership for the Future’. The Hamam re-opened three years later in 2005 and is proving as popular as ever!
