Limassol Castle is located near the old port of Limassol, close to the seafront in the heart of the historical centre of Limassol.
The Castle originally dates back to somewhere between the 4-7th Century when there was an Early Christian basilica on the site, followed by a Byzantine monument in the 11th Century. Also underneath the castle is evidence of the city’s first cathedral.
Limassol Castle as it looks and stands today dates from about the 16th Century, and since its erection was subject to continuous attacks from the Ottomans and Venetians amongst others. Limassol castle was used as a prison until about 1950.
