The small abandoned monastery of Ayias Thekla stands on the outskirts of the village. Local legend tells that the monastery was built during the 4th century by Ayia Eleni at the same time as she founded the monastery of Stavrovouni high on rocky crags overlooking Larnaca Bay. The monastery of Ayia Thekla was rebuilt in 1471 and restored during the 18th century and in itself is not spectacular, but underneath the apse in its church is a cave with a holy well known as agiasma, which is credited with curing those with skin problems such as acne and eczema. In recent years, several nuns have started to live there once again.
For those living in Mosfiloti, the village of Psevdas with its good restaurants is conveniently close by for an evening out when lethargy to cook sets in! If you would like to explore a little more of the area the surrounding villages of Kalo Horio, Ayia Anna and Pyrga have interesting architecture and in Pyrga the Royal chapel of Ayia Ekaterina which was built by the Lusignans is one of the most interesting buildings from that period.

One of the first things that visitors to the village of Mosfiloti discover is that like so many
place names in Cyprus, there are two ways to spell the village name! Traditionally, the village name was spelt with a ‘ph’, which has recently been replaced by an ‘f’ but importantly, the meaning of the village name is unchanged as it comes from the Greek name for the white hawthorn bush - the mosphila – which has long been used by local fruit growers for grafting pear and apple.
Mosfiloti lies in the eastern part of Larnaca district, close to the Nicosia- Limassol highway. In recent years, the village has dev eloped quite considerably as there have been a number of holiday villas built by Nicosians seeking a weekend hideaway, within easy reach of the capital. There is a variety of traditional architectural styles to be seen in the village. Over the last century the number of residents has remained steady at about 100.
